What is Edge AI?
Edge AI is the deployment and execution of artificial intelligence (AI) models directly on local devices such as smartphones, cameras, sensors, drones, automobiles, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, rather than relying on cloud-based servers for processing. Edge AI allows faster decision-making, lower latency, better privacy, and decreased bandwidth utilization by executing AI computations at the "edge" of the network, closer to where data is created.
Traditional AI systems frequently transmit data to remote cloud servers for analysis and inference. In contrast, Edge AI processes data locally on the device, allowing for real-time replies without the need for a continual internet connection. This makes Edge AI especially useful for applications that require speed, reliability, and privacy.
Edge AI is commonly used in several industries, including healthcare, manufacturing, automotive, retail, security, and smart cities. Common applications include facial recognition, predictive maintenance, self-driving cars, smart surveillance systems, voice assistants, and industrial automation.
One of the main advantages of Edge AI is its ability to manage sensitive data locally, which reduces privacy concerns and reliance on cloud infrastructure. However, Edge AI systems frequently operate with limited processing power, storage, and energy resources, necessitating the use of efficient AI models.
